What is the website about?
Created as a living historical archive for anyone affected by Northern Ireland’s Troubles.
Who created the site and why?
Created by a father who recognized the need for a simple historical archive,
which would put a human face to the story of Northern Ireland’s Troubles.
Learning that his children were not aware of recent history the site’s creator set out to build an easy access
website that would allow all visitors to gain a fuller depth of understanding about the ‘Troubles’ by sharing their experiences.
What is the purpose of Sharedtroubles.net?
To create a living historical archive from the stories of people affected by the ‘Troubles’ so that by sharing stories a better understanding may be achieved.
What are the aims of Sharedtroubles.net?
By recording the human experiences, Sharedtroubles.net hopes to give everyone a voice. People very often report feeling ignored. Sharedtoubles.net offers the
equal opportunity to share your story regardless of your background.
What sort of stories are welcome?
Any personal account of daily life, specific events or work related stories.
Everyone is welcome regardless of background, involvement or political stance.
The real stories and emotions of anyone affected by the Troubles.
Can I upload photographs?
Yes, photographs are welcomed to compliment your story. Just make sure you own the copyright or have permission to use the pictures.
Who moderates the content?
A volunteer moderating panel is being established from all sides of the community. Material must be legal, non-abusive and honest. As long as it complies
with the rules, Sharedtroubles.net will be happy to publish your story.
Who decides if the content is appropriate?
A volunteer moderating panel of registered site users. Some material may make uncomfortable reading, some may simply strike a chord.
Is my privacy protected?
Yes, you can choose the name displayed on Sharedtroubles.
Your first name or a ‘Display’ name along with your town are shown
ie. John, Belfast
All personal data is encrypted and cannot be seen by anyone other than the site’s administrator.
Will visitors be able to criticize me or leave unpleasant comments about my story?
Not on Sharedtroubles.net, Your story is presented like a personal page in a book. There is no provision for feedback or comments.
Can I edit my story later?
Yes, by logging on to Sharedtroubles you will be able to edit your story. Only the registered user can edit their story. Sharedtroubles does not edit material,
however if material is deemed to be illegal then you will be advised. Edited material will have to be resubmitted to the moderating panel as unfortunately
there are plonkers who would wish to ruin this opportunity by posting inappropriate material.
Where does Sharedtroubles.net get its funding?
Sharedtroubles.net is a private initiative and receives revenue from, book sales, advertising and user donations. Free to use.
When was Sharedtroubles.net be launched and how long will it be displayed for?
December 2008 was the initial launch date as long as people want it maintained we will keep it as a living historical archive.
